Capture Studio

Overview

Capture Studio is a Windows desktop application from Norwegian developer OpenHub AS that merges screen recording with a multi-track video editor. It is aimed at people who produce software demonstrations, tutorials, product walkthroughs and step-by-step documentation, and who would otherwise shuttle footage between a capture utility and a separate editing program. Screen, window and region capture runs at frame rates up to 120 FPS, and the editor adds automatic zoom, smoothed cursor motion, keystroke overlays, backgrounds, on-device captions and neural narration. The architectural pitch is local processing: recording, speech recognition, voice cloning and avatar rendering all execute on the machine rather than on remote servers, so captured material never leaves the device.

Key Features

Recorder and editor in a single Windows application. Capture Studio records a full display, a chosen window or an arbitrary drawn region, then hands the clip straight to a timeline where trimming, effects, titles, arrows, spotlights, stickers and backgrounds are applied. A live preview reflects what will be exported, so no round trip through a third-party editor is required.

Automatic zoom that follows the pointer. Zoom-ins are generated from cursor activity, keeping the viewer's attention on the area being clicked or typed in. Manual keyframe zoom remains available for sequences where an operator wants explicit control over scale and timing.

Smooth cursor, click highlights and keystroke overlay. Pointer motion is stabilised to remove jitter, clicks produce ripple highlights, and optional on-screen key rendering shows shortcuts as they are pressed. These are the details that separate a raw capture from a watchable tutorial.

On-device subtitles and neural voice-over. Speech-to-text runs locally with automatic language detection and produces styled captions. A library of 85 neural voices spans 22 languages, and a short recording of a person's voice is enough to clone it for narration. Noise cancelling strips fan hum, keyboard clatter and room tone from captured audio.

AI avatars and camera overlays. Studio Avatar is a compact neural model that animates a presenter delivering the script with lip synchronisation, intended to run on consumer hardware. It currently supports two standard female voices plus most premium female voices, with additional avatars listed as future work.

Snapshot documentation export. A separate mode follows and captures each step of an on-screen procedure, records the accompanying text and exports the result as Markdown, PDF, HTML or a PowerPoint Show, turning one recording session into written instructions.

Precision tools: alignment guides and privacy blur. Guides mark the canvas centre and object edges and highlight when elements line up. Blur regions mask passwords, faces or confidential fields, are keyframeable and can auto-track a moving window.

Styling and delivery options. Floating displays place footage in a rounded, softly shadowed window that slides in over a background, while portable project export bundles a project with its media so it can be moved or archived intact.

How It Works

The workflow begins with a capture mode selection. A user chooses a monitor, an application window or a drawn region, sets the frame rate and starts recording, optionally with a webcam overlay and microphone input. During recording the application logs cursor paths, click events and key presses, and that telemetry feeds the automatic zoom, click ripple and keystroke layers applied afterwards.

Once recording stops, the clip lands on the editor timeline. Effects preview in real time, and the properties panel groups settings into tabs where frequently used styles can be saved and reused. Subtitles, narration or a cloned voice track are generated locally, and noise reduction is applied to the audio. Snapshot mode is used separately when the objective is written documentation rather than video.

Export closes the loop. The finished file is rendered on the same machine, and a portable project export option allows the whole edit, including source media, to be relocated to another computer or archived for later revision.

Software teams documenting a release can record a feature walkthrough, apply zoom that tracks each click, add captions for silent viewing and publish the clip without sending footage to a hosted service. Support organisations producing knowledge-base articles can run Snapshot mode, capture every step of a configuration task and export the sequence as Markdown or a PDF that sits alongside the written procedure.

Educators and course creators use the keystroke overlay and smoothed cursor to demonstrate keyboard shortcuts clearly, while the 120 FPS ceiling helps when recording fast interface motion or on high refresh rate displays. Voice-over work is handled locally: a creator records a short sample, clones the voice and narrates an entire lesson in any of the 22 supported languages without booking studio time or exposing a biometric sample to a third party. Privacy-sensitive sectors such as healthcare, legal and finance can blur patient data, credentials or contract terms with keyframed, tracking blur regions and keep the uncut footage on a controlled device. Product marketers producing demo reels can drop captures onto branded backgrounds with floating display styling, then let an avatar presenter deliver the script on camera.

It competes with established screen recorders such as Camtasia, which the site names as an alternative, and with cloud transcription and voice-generation services that require uploading media.
